Mothers are Memory Keepers

I think it is fair to say that for many families, Mothers are memory keepers. Can’t remember somebody’s birthday? Call Mom. Wondering what that kid was called who used to file her fingernails to a point, pretend to be a cat & scratch your brother? Call Mom. Want to know what your ballet teacher was really drinking in her ever-present coffee mug? Ask Mom.

Mothers are the Memory Keepers. A UK Yankee Blogpost about memory keeping and mothers.

We’re wired that way

It may be the way our brains are wired. In recent years, science has gone on to support the theory that male and female brains are wired differently and comparative studies of thousands of brain scans have shown that women’s brains excel at social skills and memory. So that’s why my mom is so good at remembering the way that we are related to everybody not only on her side of the family but on my dad’s side of the family too! Mother Nature. Another Mother.

However, there is certainly a time in a Mother’s life when she can use a little assistance in remembering. Call it Baby Brain! Those precious first days and months with a new baby can fly by in a blur with photographs locked into your iPhone. And then, in a snap of your fingers, your tiny infant is already a year old, the memories of that soft baby smell and those funny little faces a fleeting memory.

Memory keeping and baby books

When my brothers and I were kids, my mom had a baby book for each of us. Little details about when we were born and photographs of the early days. Ahh! Such gorgeous memories. I can still picture some of the photographs in that washed-out 1970s Kodak Instamatic filter that we can now achieve with a tap of the screen.

We received 2 baby books when Minnie-Sue was born! And because I am:

A) My Mothers Daughter

and

B) A former genealogist

I was ALL OVER filling in those books. I was Snapfish’s best customer for photo printing. Now, Minnie Sue adores going back through and seeing those photos of teensy-tiny her. And reading about the time that she snaffled so many blackberries, she had purple nappies for a week!

Some of you may know that I wrote a baby-book for my brother and his husband when they adopted a baby. I named it, The Baby Files. My reasons for writing this book were initially because I couldn’t find a book that was appropriate for same-sex parents. Then as I got my groove on and found The Best Illustrator Ever, I found that I really wanted to create a book that had a generally wider appeal. Because families come in so many different forms. At the end of the day, it is Love that Makes a Family.
